• Trade-offs: Installing packages at the root layer (rpm-ostree) requires a system reboot to apply. Users who want to deeply modify system files or customize kernel configs will find the immutability restrictive.

3. CachyOS: The Performance-Optimized Mutable Powerhouse

CachyOS is a mutable, Arch-based distribution engineered specifically for maximum speed and raw frame rates.

• How Mutability Works: CachyOS uses standard Arch Linux package management (pacman). You have full access to modify every file, install system dependencies directly, and access the Arch User Repository (AUR) without container barriers.

• Strengths: Optimized binaries compiled specifically for modern CPU instruction sets (x86-64-v3, v4, Zen4), paired with custom latency-tuned kernels (BORE, sched-ext). It delivers the highest raw benchmark performance and lowest input latency among the three.

• Trade-offs: Because it is mutable and rolling-release, a bad package update or user mistake can break the OS. It requires routine maintenance and isn't ideal as a hands-off living-room couch OS.
