How do I set up RetroArch and FinalBurn Neo on Linux for arcade gaming step-by-step?

Guía Básica Retro Gaming: Utilizando RetroArch sobre GNU/Linux

Setting up RetroArch with the FinalBurn Neo (FBNeo) core is the gold standard for 2D arcade emulation on Linux. It offers lower input latency than standalone MAME, native support for modern gamepads and fightsticks, and excellent CRT shader capabilities.

Here is the complete step-by-step configuration guide.

1.Install RetroArch via Flatpak:Recommended for all Linux distributions.

Flatpak provides the most stable RetroArch build with up-to-date graphics drivers and shader support.

Run the following in your terminal:

Bash

flatpak install flathub org.libretro.RetroArch

Once installed, launch RetroArch from your desktop application menu or by running flatpak run org.libretro.RetroArch.

2.Download the FinalBurn Neo Core:

Inside RetroArch, use your keyboard or controller to navigate the menu:

  1. Go to Main Menu $\rightarrow$ Online Updater $\rightarrow$ Core Downloader.

  2. Scroll down to the Arcade section.

  3. Select Arcade (FinalBurn Neo) to install the core automatically.

3.Prepare Your Arcade ROM Set:Must use an FBNeo-compatible ROM set.

Unlike console emulators, arcade emulators require ROMs compiled specifically for that core version:

  • Search for an FBNeo v1.0.0.x Non-Merged ROM set.

  • A non-merged set is best because every .zip file contains all files needed to run that game independently, without relying on parent ROM zip files.

  • Place your zipped ROM files in a dedicated directory (for example, ~/Games/Arcade/). Do not unzip the .zip files.

4.Scan ROMs and Build Your Playlist:

Using a Manual Scan prevents missing titles due to filename differences:

  1. Go to Import Content $\rightarrow$ Manual Scan.

  2. Set Content Directory to your arcade ROMs folder (~/Games/Arcade/).

  3. Set System Name to Arcade.

  4. Set Default Core to Arcade (FinalBurn Neo).

  5. Set File Extensions to zip.

  6. Scroll to the bottom and select Start Scan.

An Arcade tab with a cabinet icon will appear in your sidebar containing all ready-to-play titles.

5.Configure Arcade Controls and CRT Shaders:

Before launching a game:

  • Coin / Start Binds: In arcade games, pressing Select / Back inserts a coin, and Start begins the game. To rebind buttons, launch a game, open the quick menu (F1 or Guide Button), and select Controls $\rightarrow$ Port 1 Controls.

  • Enable Scanlines: Go to Main Menu $\rightarrow$ Online Updater $\rightarrow$ Update Slang Shaders. Then while in-game, open the quick menu, go to Shaders, turn them ON, and choose shaders_slang/crt/crt-easymode.slangp for classic scanlines.
