How to Update GE-Proton in Heroic
GE-Proton releases are standalone, immutable builds rather than auto-updating packages. To update:
-
Check for New Builds: Open Wine Manager > Proton-GE. If a newer version is available on GitHub, it will appear at the top of the list.
-
Download the New Build: Click the Download button for the new version.
-
Switch Runtimes: Go to Settings > Game Defaults (or individual game settings) and update the Wine Version drop-down to point to the new GE-Proton release.
-
Clean Up Old Builds: Each GE-Proton version uses 1–2 GB of storage. In the Wine Manager tab, click the Trash Can / Delete icon next to older, unused GE-Proton versions to reclaim disk space.
Alternative: Managing GE-Proton with ProtonUp-Qt
If you use multiple launchers (such as Steam, Lutris, and Heroic), you can use ProtonUp-Qt to manage GE-Proton versions across all apps simultaneously:
-
Install ProtonUp-Qt from your app store (e.g., KDE Discover or GNOME Software) or via Flatpak:
Bash
flatpak install flathub net.davidotek.pupgui2 -
Open ProtonUp-Qt, select Heroic Games Launcher in the dropdown, and click Add Version.
-
Choose GE-Proton, hit Install, and it will immediately become available inside Heroic's settings menus.
