The Captain Guide: Nugget Node - El Dorado.

When you arrive at Nugget Node, there is only a Mining Site to visit.

Head left and you will encounter the start of a competition. Once the conversation ends, keep going left and you will engage in another conversation about participating in a competition yourself. Check the Info Board and join the only competition that has an opening: the Moon Gem Cup.

Join the Moon Gem Cup (don’t worry about the name, it will never be said correctly and you will eventually accept the incorrect name). After accepting, you will have someone call you over and explain the rules to you if you haven’t participated in a contest before (if this is your first playthrough).

You will have 10 days to mine from 3 moons. The moons can be accessed by going back to your ship and checking the star map. You will also have some mining equipment automatically loaned to you for the duration of the contest.

Head back to the ship and the Star Map will be updated with the locations of the 3 moons. They will appear as small blue diamonds near Nugget Node.

You can choose between Grey, Red and Green Moon. Grey Moon is 2 days away, Red Moon is 3 days away and Green Moon is 4 days away.

Grey Moon

When you land, Shuttle will give you an overview of what to do. You can use the Analyzer from your inventory to find ground that would be great for mining. After the first use, a button will appear at the top of the screen for easy use of the tool.

When you are confident you have found a spot, mark the spot with a Drill Beacon. Use it from your inventory and it will lock on the place where you are currently standing. You can use the Analyzer to check the average percentage of gems you can receive from a particular gem location.

Be careful, as areas with lots of gems don’t always give you the largest number. Small areas with a higher percentage can get a higher return on your investment. There are only three spots; you can’t call the drill down on the spot where a miner is already standing.

However, you can talk to the miner on Red Moon and pay them $80 or Green Moon for $100 to get access to their spot. To win, it is essential to pay the $100 for the Green Moon miner’s spot.

The miner on Grey Moon will not move no matter what you do. However, you can go left and pick up some Fool’s Gold. Make a breadcrumb-like trail of Fool’s Gold (interact with it in your inventory to put it on the ground) and then put one piece near the miner. He will follow the trail and vacate his spot.

When the Drill has landed, interact with it and select “Start Drill” to begin drilling.

This is what Grey Moon looks like:

From left to right, the three spots are 80%, 17% and 36%. The miner’s spot is 80%

Green Moon

This is what Green Moon looks like:

730px-The_Captain_Nugget_Node_7.jpg

From left to right, the three spots are 0%, 5% and 100%. The miner is standing on a 90% spot.

Red Moon

This is what Red Moon looks like:

From left to right, the three spots are 50%, 166% and 90%. The miner is standing on a 20% spot.

When your 10 days are up, return to Nugget Node and talk to the Clerk on the very left of the area, the one who spoke to you about the rules. Choose to register your results and you will get a prize based on your rankings.

730px-The_Captain_Nugget_Node_9.jpg

  • To get 3rd place, you need more than 219 Gems.
  • To get 2nd place, you need more than 339 Gems.
  • To get 1st place, you need more than 449 Gems.

To get 1st place, you should:

  • Dig all around Red Moon, but not where the miner is.
  • Buy the mining spot from the miner in Green Moon for $100 and get the 100% spot.
  • Trick the miner in Grey Moon and take his spot, then dig at the 80% spot.

Depending on your performance, you will get 1 of 3 Ending Cards.

If you got 3rd place, you will get the “Third Place” Ending Card, which comes with $200.

If you got 2nd place, you will get the “Second Place” Ending Card, which comes with $400.

If you got 1st place, you will get the “First Place” Ending Card, which comes with $500. It is technically $600, but you have to spend $100 in order to get enough gems to get 1st place.

Note that the Time Loss mention for each Ending Card is the 10 days spent on the competition.

At this point, you should have enough funds to purchase an Engine V3 upgrade (provided you got an Engine V2 upgrade before) and make your way towards Earth if you like. If you still need some more resources, you can explore Celic or Fenton Perth if you like.

Alternatively, you can also visit Lyme or Pi. Lyme can potentially open up access to Spacegate, which will warp you just outside Barrier Control. Pi can potentially get you a better engine, which lets you get to Barrier Control faster by manual travel.
