Guide to bind keys or How to set up a macro
You just learned a spell and don't like to type "/cast <spellname>" every time to cast it and also think the quickslots way to cast spells is not the optimum ? Read on to learn how to cast a spell, use a skill and make your communication much easier by simply pressing a key.
Basically every command in the game can be set up so that you only need to press a key and the command will be executed, which is of course way faster than typing the command manually.
Let us take a look at the "Bind Keys" dialog, open the following image in a new tab / window.
You can open this dialog by pressing F11 or pressing ESC , navigating to the "Key Settings" and then pressing ENTER.
On the left side under the heading "Group" you see the different groups of commands structured by topics.
The "Movement" topic which is currently selected shows the keys assigned to all directions you can walk to.
(Here you can assign different keys if you have a laptop that doesn't have a number pad.)
The first column "Macro" contains the command that is executed when you press the key listed under "Key", if the last column "Repeat" is set to "on" the commands execution will be repeated until you stop pressing the assigned key.
Now let us assign a key to the wizard spell "magic bullet" which should be one of the first spells you learn in the game.
- Open the dialog by pressing F11 or pressing ESC , navigating to the "Key Settings" and then pressing ENTER.
- Click on the "Misc" group tag. - The "Misc" section is where you can enter all your desired macros.
- Click on an empty row. (or use the cursor up/down arrows)
- Press ENTER.
- Type "/cast magic bullet" and press ENTER.
- Hit the 1 key close to your ESC key.
- Click on "Done" or press the D key, this activates your newly created macro and also closes the dialog.
Now press the 1 key, you will cast a magic bullet in the direction you are facing provided you already know the spell, have enough mana and your spell fumble value is low enough.
Here is another useful example, this one will make your communication easier:
- Open the dialog by pressing F11 or pressing ESC , navigating to the "Key Settings" and then pressing ENTER.
- Click on the "Misc" group tag. - The "Misc" section is where you can enter all your desired macros.
- Click on an empty row. (or use the cursor up/down arrows)
- Press ENTER.
- Type "?M_MCON/shout " and press ENTER. (Note the extra space at the end, this saves you one key press every time you want to shout. The "?M_MCON" part opens the console, remember to put this before all your communication macros. )
- Hit a key of your choice, I use the key left to backspace for my "/shout " macro.
- Click on "Done" or press the D key, this activates your newly created macro and also closes the dialog.
All macros are saved in the file "keys.dat" if you prefer to edit your macros in a text editor, using the ingame method is preferable though because the chance to mess up macros is smaller that way. Only use a text editor if you really know what you are doing.
To give you an example for a useful key setup, here is an excerpt of my "keys.dat" file, note that this is how I like to play the game, you are free to choose whichever keys you want, just make sure you don't assign two macros to the same key.
Do not simply copy and paste the following into your "keys.dat" file.
