How do I install and update GE-Proton in Heroic Games Launcher?

How to install GE Proton Versions On Steam Deck for Steam, Lutris & Heroic Games Launcher

Heroic Games Launcher includes a built-in Wine Manager that handles fetching, extracting, and configuring GE-Proton directly inside the application—no manual file extraction or terminal commands required.

Installing GE-Proton via Heroic's Wine Manager

1.Open the Wine Manager:Use Heroic's built-in download tool.

  1. Launch Heroic Games Launcher.

  2. Click Wine Manager on the left navigation sidebar.

  3. Select the Proton-GE tab along the top.

2.Download the Desired GE-Proton Version:Downloads directly from GitHub.

  1. Look through the list of available versions (the latest build appears at the top).

  2. Click the Download / Install (cloud icon) next to the version you want (e.g., GE-Proton-Latest or a specific numbered build).

  3. Heroic will automatically download, extract, and install the files into ~/.config/heroic/tools/proton/ or your system's shared compatibility folder.

3.Set GE-Proton as Your Runtime:Apply to all games or a specific title.

  • To set as the default for all future games:

    1. Go to Settings (left sidebar) > Game Defaults.

    2. Under Wine Version, open the drop-down menu and select your installed GE-Proton build.

  • To set for a single game:

    1. Click on the game in your Library and open its Settings (gear icon).

    2. Under the Wine tab, change Wine Version to your installed GE-Proton build.

How to Update GE-Proton in Heroic

GE-Proton releases are standalone, immutable builds rather than auto-updating packages. To update:

  1. Check for New Builds: Open Wine Manager > Proton-GE. If a newer version is available on GitHub, it will appear at the top of the list.

  2. Download the New Build: Click the Download button for the new version.

  3. Switch Runtimes: Go to Settings > Game Defaults (or individual game settings) and update the Wine Version drop-down to point to the new GE-Proton release.

  4. Clean Up Old Builds: Each GE-Proton version uses 1–2 GB of storage. In the Wine Manager tab, click the Trash Can / Delete icon next to older, unused GE-Proton versions to reclaim disk space.

Alternative: Managing GE-Proton with ProtonUp-Qt

If you use multiple launchers (such as Steam, Lutris, and Heroic), you can use ProtonUp-Qt to manage GE-Proton versions across all apps simultaneously:

  1. Install ProtonUp-Qt from your app store (e.g., KDE Discover or GNOME Software) or via Flatpak:

    Bash

    flatpak install flathub net.davidotek.pupgui2

  2. Open ProtonUp-Qt, select Heroic Games Launcher in the dropdown, and click Add Version.

  3. Choose GE-Proton, hit Install, and it will immediately become available inside Heroic's settings menus.
