Macedonia or Macedon  was an ancient kingdom on the periphery of Archaic and Classical Greece, and later the dominant state of Hellenistic Greece.

The kingdom was founded and initially ruled by the royal Argead dynasty, which was followed by the Antipatrid and Antigonid dynasties. Home to the ancient Macedonians, the earliest kingdom was centered on the northeastern part of the Greek peninsula, and bordered by Epirus to the west, Paeonia to the north, Thrace to the east and Thessaly to the south.

The Macedonian kings, who wielded absolute power and commanded state resources such as gold and silver, facilitated mining operations to mint currency, finance their armies and, by the reign of Philip II, a Macedonian navy.

The Macedonian Empire.

Unlike the other diadochi successor states, the imperial cult fostered by Alexander was never adopted in Macedonia, yet Macedonian rulers nevertheless assumed roles as high priests of the kingdom and leading patrons of domestic and international cults of the Hellenistic religion.

The authority of Macedonian kings was theoretically limited by the institution of the army, while a few municipalities within the Macedonian commonwealth enjoyed a high degree of autonomy and even had democratic governments with popular assemblies.

The city of Athens.

The city of Athens  during the classical period of Ancient Greece (508–322 BC)  was the major urban center of the notable polis (city-state) of the same name, located in Attica, Greece, leading the Delian League in the Peloponnesian War against Sparta and the Peloponnesian League.

Athenian democracy was established in 508 BC under Cleisthenes following the tyranny of Isagoras. This system remained remarkably stable, and with a few brief interruptions remained in place for 180 years, until 322 BC (aftermath of Lamian War). The peak of Athenian hegemony was achieved in the 440s to 430s BC, known as the Age of Pericles.

In the classical period, Athens was a center for the arts, learning and philosophy, home of Plato's Akademia and Aristotle's Lyceum, Athens was also the birthplace of Socrates, Plato, Pericles, Aristophanes, Sophocles, and many other prominent philosophers, writers and politicians of the ancient world. It is widely referred to as the cradle of Western Civilization, and the birthplace of democracy largely due to the impact of its cultural and political achievements during the 5th and 4th centuries BC on the rest of the then-known European continent.

Hellenic Factions in 0 A.D.

Controlling the representatives from the Hellenic region, the player has the power of Sparta, Athens and Macedonia at his command. As the forebearers of philosophy, democracy, geometry, and hellenistic art and architecture, they are considered to be civic minded.
Controlling the representatives from the Hellenic region, the player has the power of Sparta, Athens and Macedonia at his command.

However, do not discount the strength of their stone structures, the resolve of a hoplite in phalanx formation, or their historic ability to steal victory against seemingly insurmountable odds.

The Hellenes were removed from the list of playable civilizations in Alpha 10, replaced by the derivative civilizations Macedonians, Athenians, and Spartans. The Hellenes remain in the game as Atlas Only Objects.

The Athenians.

The Athenians represent the City-State of Athens and the allies influenced by them. As the forebearers of Athenian democracy and philosophy, they are least war driven of all the Hellenistic factions - although the combination of their economic and military potential makes them very formidable with a selection of units.

Athenians have access to all the naval technologies including several special unique ones and a civilization bonus that specifically decreases their ship construction times, and a moderately powerful and effective navy much like all Hellenistic factions.

Athenian Infantry are fairly well armored and versatile, with effective citizen solider spearmen and skirmishers along with specialist late game champion units and having access to the powerful Phalanx formation for melee infantry.

Although lacking in the Battering Ram, they possess effective siegecraft with Stone Throwers and Bolt Shooters along with their upgrades.

Well rounded Cavalry, with access to very effective raiding cavalry to harass enemy support units and chase down weak and vulnerable infantry.

Athenian Walls are some of the best available, with strong stone walls and wall towers that can fire on enemy troops while also with a special technology allowing them to be built and extended into neutral territory.

The Spartans.

Spartans are a Hellenistic city-state that possess very strong melee infantry. Notably they cannot build Stone Walls, only palisade walls - the soldiers of Sparta will need to serve as their walls.
Sparta heavily relies on its supremely powerful melee infantry, levying this advantage is the difference between success and defeat.

Spartan Cavalry are lacking, along with their siegecraft but a good player can make use of the mounted skirmisher and the trusty battering ram.

Spartan Naval technologies are fairly standard for a Hellenistic civilization, although not a match for the Athenians - if used wisely is still fairly decent.

The Spartans possess a robust but mostly average economy, with good mining technologies and farming technologies; the economy should be fairly capable of supporting this military powerhouse.

The Spartans are clearly an offensive civilization, for them the best defense is a good and brutal offensive campaign or swift preemptive blow to their adversaries. In fact, since they are unable to build any advanced walls beyond palisades its quite possibly their only form of defense.

The Macedonian.

The Macedonians are a Hellenistic faction originating from northeastern Greece around the Haliacmon valley, over time they came to expand and dominate Thrace and Illyria. Then under Alexander the Great went on conquer much of the known world traveling as far as India before dying of fever and forever cementing the influence of Greek culture throughout the contemporary known world. Perhaps one of the best known conquerors of nations, Alexander's legacy remained around for some time even under new kingdoms headed by his former generals. With a wide selection of units and siege engines, Macedonians are well suited to creative tactics and strategy - especially combined arms.

Macedonians have a wide selection of infantry available from well armored hoplite spearmen to all ranged infantry, both skirmishers and archers along with slingers. Making them a very capable and robust faction, capable of countering and avoid themselves from being countered, lacking only in dedicated swordsmen.

Macedonian Cavalry are some of the best available in terms of quality, more than equal to any Persian Cavalryman. Companion Cavalry are heavily armored, quick and very powerful especially useful for keeping away enemy swordsmen and even often capable of taking on enemy spearmen.
Macedonians also are capable of fielding all major types of siege engines available, from Bolt shooters to Catapults and especially the fearsome "Helopolis" Siege Tower. Macedonians should be more than capable of assaulting any fortified opponent.

Their navy is more or less similar to other Hellenistic factions, sporting a decent navy to support their endeavors.

They also have pretty decent fortifications with effective stone walls and wall towers to defend them.
