107 Action Games FPS for Linux (Chapter 1).

The genre coalesced with 1992's Wolfenstein 3D, which is generally credited with creating the genre proper and the basic archetype upon which subsequent titles were based.

One such title, and the progenitor of the genre's wider mainstream acceptance and popularity was Doom, released the following year and perhaps the most influential first-person shooter.

Half-Life, released in 1998, enhanced the narrative and puzzle elements, and along with its 2004 sequel Half-Life 2, showcases the considerable development of the genre's potential. GoldenEye 007 (1997) was the first landmark first-person shooter for home consoles, with the Halo series heightening the console's commercial and critical appeal as a platform for first-person shooter titles.

In the 21st century, the first-person shooter is one of the most commercially viable and fastest growing video game genres. alienarena_logo

[alienarena3[3].jpg]  Alien Arena 2008 Alien Arena 2008 combines some of the very best aspects of such games as Quake III and Unreal Tournament and wraps them up with a retro alien theme, while adding tons of original ideas to make the game quite unique. The game comes alive with the full implementation of GLSL per-pixel lighting on all surfaces, OpenAL audio system, and new gameplay features. Optimization was as always, another aspect that we've addressed. No longer does one have to be leary of cranking the settings up, the game plays remarkably faster with the switch to GLSL for per-pixel operations. Alien Arena has transformed into a lean, clean, fragging machine, with stunning visual effects that are usually reserved for commercial titles. This isn't your daddy's Alien Arena - it's not even last year's model, with a host of new and improved maps, sounds and music.

Quake III Arena Cell Shading is a modification for Quake III Arena which makes the game look like a painting or cartoon. Two techniques are used. The default one (Kuwahara filtering) simplifies the texture a bit, and the second one removes the texture, so it looks plain. The goal of this project is to add Cell Shading capabilities to the Quake III engine with Real-time performance. In order to provide such feature we have decided to use Kuwahara filter. Kuwahara filter is a noise-reduction filter that preserves edges. It uses four subquadrants to calculate the mean and variance and chooses the mean value for the region with the smallest variance. To increase the hand-painted effect we have decided to apply a simple blur filter to reduce hard-edges on textures and increase the flatness effect.
